What Makes These Yoga Classes Different

Alison’s yoga classes are rooted in three core principles:

1. Embodied Awareness Over Performance

You will not be asked to force shapes or keep up with anyone else. Instead, classes invite you to notice how your body moves, where it holds tension, and what feels supportive right now. You are encouraged to listen inward and move at your own pace.

2. Structural Integration Meets Yoga

As a Certified Rolfer® and experienced E-RYT 500, Alison brings a unique lens to yoga practice. Her primary training under Richard Freeman and studies in India ground her teaching in the Ashtanga Vinyasa and Iyengar alignment traditions. You’ll learn how to move with more ease, support your joints, and create sustainable patterns that feel good in your body.

3. Nervous System-Informed Practice

Many students arrive feeling wired, depleted, or stuck in overdrive. These classes incorporate breath, pacing, and grounding techniques that help regulate the nervous system so you leave feeling calmer and more settled, not exhausted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of yoga is best for beginners?

For beginners, we recommend Roots Yoga: Foundations for Grounding. This class focuses on basic postures, breathwork, and alignment in a gentle, supportive environment. You’ll learn foundational skills at a comfortable pace with plenty of modifications.

All of our classes are beginner-friendly, and Alison provides modifications to meet you where you are.

If you practice yoga consistently for 30 days, you may experience:

  • Increased flexibility – Greater range of motion and ease of movement
  • Improved strength – Stronger muscles, better core stability, and improved balance
  • Better sleep quality – Calmer nervous system and more restorative rest
  • Reduced stress and anxiety – Lower cortisol levels and improved mood
  • Enhanced body awareness – Greater connection to your body’s signals and needs

The key is consistency—even short, regular practices create meaningful change over time.

Yes, practicing yoga 3 times a week can provide significant benefits—especially when combined with consistent home practice. For most people, 3 classes per week is a sustainable rhythm that allows for:

  • Regular nervous system regulation
  • Gradual strength and flexibility gains
  • Time for the body to rest and integrate
  • Balance with other life commitments

That said, even 1-2 classes per week—supplemented with short daily practices at home—can create meaningful change. Quality and consistency matter more than quantity.

While weight loss may not be the primary goal of yoga practice, yoga can support overall health and body composition in meaningful ways:

  • Nervous system regulation – Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which is linked to belly fat storage. Yoga helps calm the stress response and restore hormonal balance.
  • Improved digestion – Yoga stimulates digestive organs, massages internal systems, and supports healthy elimination.
  • Strength and muscle tone – Regular practice strengthens muscles, improves posture, and creates a more toned appearance.
  • Body awareness – Yoga cultivates awareness of hunger cues, movement patterns, and how your body feels—supporting healthier choices.
  • Sustainable movement – Unlike high-intensity exercise that can burn out the nervous system, yoga builds capacity in a sustainable way.

At Roots & Wings, we focus on helping you feel grounded, capable, and at ease in your body—regardless of size or shape. Yoga is a practice of embodied sovereignty, not a weight loss program.

While yoga is not primarily a weight loss tool, it can support belly fat reduction through:

  • Stress reduction – Lowering cortisol (the stress hormone linked to abdominal fat storage)
  • Improved digestion – Stimulating digestive organs and supporting healthy metabolism
  • Core strengthening – Building muscle in the abdominal area
  • Body awareness – Helping you make healthier food and movement choices

That said, yoga’s greatest gift is not a flatter belly—it’s a more grounded, capable, embodied you. At Roots & Wings, we focus on helping you feel at home in your body, regardless of size or shape.
