Roots & Wings

Grief came over me the other day… and instead of trying to stop it, I let my nervous system respond with intelligence.

The feeling of “this is all too much” came over me. For years, I trained myself to override these emotions.
I have to keep it all together, is what I’d tell myself.
This time, the tears came and wouldn’t stop. I surrendered to them.

I allowed myself to feel all of it and collapse into the heaviness in my chest.

It wasn’t graceful.

In fact, it was downright messy!
But I knew exactly what was happening. My nervous system was doing its job.
The nervous system moves through waves:

First, activation—

a surge of energy, shock, tightness.

And then, when it’s too much to hold…

We drop into something deeper.

The tears come. And they continue.

The body shuts down, softens, or collapses, and we want to curl up and want to hide.
Why? Because we have come to a place where we can’t hold it all anymore.

But here’s what I want you to know:

This is not weakness.

This is your body releasing.

Tears are one of the ways your system metabolizes overwhelm and begins to reorganize.

Grief is not just emotional.

It is physical.

It moves through you.

And when we allow it—without trying to fix or rush it—

something begins to shift.

A tenderness arises.

A clearing.

A return to Self.
